Smart appliances are appliances connected through a central network hub so you can access and control them from anywhere, usually via a Bluetooth remote control, tablet, laptop, smartphone, or other mobile device. They operate much like any modern appliance with the added feature of letting the owner access them when they're away from their home, along with a variety of safety features in some cases. Smart appliances run from a computer system that can be pre-programmed or even learn to adapt to a homeowner's needs and preferences.
Smart technology is always changing and getting better. Currently, you're probably most familiar with automated lighting and temperature control systems that can be controlled via smartphone. You may be less aware of home appliances that can contact the manufacturer themselves if something's wrong, or can shut themselves down if there's a short circuit that could cause a problem. Some manufacturers have released refrigerators that play your favorite song or update the grocery list when you're running low on a specific item, and the future has even more surprises in store. You may soon be able to start a load of laundry from the market, or preheat the oven before you get home.
Integrating smart appliances into your home is fairly simple, and many homes are currently being built with smart technology in mind. The fully automated home of near-future science fiction is almost at our doorstep, and in some cases, it's already here.
